As someone who sings about sexual and violent stuff, Lana Del Rey is stereotypically the least religious woman in the entertainment industry – and that says a lot.
Plus, she also has ties with the one and only Marilyn Manson, whose success is built upon goth and mysticism.
Still, there have been some discussions about the artist’s spiritual beliefs. Some claim that she’s a Catholic while others claim she is a Christian follower. We’re here to set things straight by taking a closer look at Lana’s opinions about religion and the links between her and spirituality.
Lana Del Rey Has A Background in Catholicism
In an interview with Complex Magazine, Lana revealed that much of her childhood life revolved around Catholicism. She was raised in a Catholic household, attended a Catholic school, and even sang in church choirs during worship services.
However, it is interesting to note that in the same interview, Lana admitted that her participation in church choirs wasn’t necessarily inspired by Jesus – rather, she was inspired by the musical hymns. So, while she engaged in Catholic practices, it could be safe to say that she wasn’t necessarily religious.
Did Lana Del Rey Really Burn a Bible?
There have been rumors flying around that Lana allegedly burned a Bible to pieces. If that is true, it might be hard to believe that she knows and respects God. After all, the Bible is a sacred book.
However, these rumors seem to be just products of fake news. There is no evidence of Lana Del Rey burning any Bible. So, you can lower your pitchforks now and calm down.
Lana Del Rey’s Religious Beliefs Now: Does She Still Believe In God?
20 years is a lot of time for someone to transition from a devoted Catholic to a godless heathen. Now that Lana has put her church girl days behind her, many are wondering whether she still believes in God.
It seems that Lana herself is interested in that discussion, as she actually graduated with a degree in metaphysics at Fordham University.
According to her, she chose that degree because “it bridged the gap between God and science.” And if you’re wondering what even metaphysics means, Lana described it in her Tokyo Numero Magazine interview:
“It’s not as complicated as it sounds. There’s different branches so it depends on which branch you’re studying. If you’re studying something like cosmogony, you’re studying about the origins of the universe, and how reality came to be reality. Like this space that we’re sitting in now — how did we come to inhabit this place? And why this reality strikes us as it is. I studied that up in the Bronx.”
However, Lana isn’t just entertaining the concept of God in an academic sense. In several interviews, the American singer has established that she does have a personal relationship with God – not in a religious sense, but “more spiritual.”
She also admitted that she believes in Him mainly because of all the bad things happening in her life:
“My understanding of God has come from my own personal experiences. Because I was in trouble so many times in New York that if you were me, you would believe in God too.”
And as for whether or not she still says her prayers, Lana revealed:
“When things get bad enough, your only resort is to lie in bed and start praying. I dunno about congregating once a week in a church and all that, but when I heard there is a divine power you can call on, I did. I suppose my approach to religion is like my approach to music – I take what I want and leave the rest.”
In other words, yes – Lana Del Rey does believe in God. However, she does not follow any particular religion. Her relationship with God is more of a spiritual and personal connection than religious.
