If Hollywood taught us anything of value, it’s that looks can be deceiving. We’ve learned that even the most badass-looking men can be feminine at heart – or vice versa!
There are many celebrities whose fashion choices and artistic expression do not match with their gender identity. Now, many are wondering if such is the case with Adam Levine.
For the past years, the Maroon 5 singer has found himself in the crosshair of gay rumors after publicly advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.
Adam has mentioned in several interviews that he feels very strongly about supporting the LGBTQ+ community – but why? Is it because he’s gay himself or are there any other factors at play? Let’s find out.
Adam Levine’s Fight Against LGBTQ+ Discrimination
Over the years, the Moves Like Jagger singer been very passionate about the cause and has done many amazing things for the community, such as:
- Partnering with the It Gets Better campaign to help raise awareness against LGBTQ+ teen suicide
- Renouncing anti same-sex marriage on live TV
- Changing the venue for their post-Grammy party after the original restaurant showed support for Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage
- Criticized the show American Idol for allegedly censoring the sexuality of gay contestants
In response to Adam’s comments, the executive producer of American Idol, Nigel Lythgoe, said this during an interview:
“To be frank, I didn’t understand why we’re talking about contestants being gay or not gay. I don’t go into my dentist and say, ‘Are you gay?’ I don’t say to contestants on So You Think You Can Dance [and say] ‘Are you gay?’ What does it [have] to do with me? What does it [have] to do with anybody? When does privacy stop in this country? If somebody wants to say they’re gay, it’s up to them.”
The LGBTQ+ Influences on Adam Levine’s Life
Looking at the industry which Adam belongs in as well as his personal life, it’s easy to see where he might have gotten the inspiration from. His younger brother, Michael Levine, is gay – and the Levine family has apparently known that ever since he was two years old.
When asked if his brother’s gender identity motivated Adam to advocate for gay rights, he said:
“I don’t think having a gay brother has affected the way I feelt about it, because I would feel the same way regardless. I happen to have a gay brother, but that doesn’t mean I’m more of an advocate for equal human rights. That shouldn’t change anything about the way I feel.”
Meanwhile, Adam Levine also acknowledged the androgynous icons in the music industry who paved the way for artists like him to be heteroflexible. These guys are David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, and Mick Jagger.
Adam Levine’s Response To Gay Rumors
We know that Adam is very passionate about his fight against LGBTQ+ discrimination and also has a loved one who is gay. With that kind of environment, some believe that Adam has acquired some level of gayness.
But to set the records straight, Adam Levine himself has said that he is, in fact, straight. He may find some guys attractive, but not in a romantic or sexual way. There is such a thing as platonic compliments.
Adam also said that he’s not affected by the gay rumors at all, and is very comfortable with his own sexuality.
“There is no way to hide my straightness. But if people didn’t think there was a small chance I was gay, then I wouldn’t be doing my job very well.”
So, to all of you who keeps insisting that Adam is gay, just give it a rest. It’s not something you get to decide for other people. Instead, let’s join Adam and other pro-gay celebrities in their fight against gender discrimination and inequality. Isn’t that more meaningful?
