At first glance, there’s nothing overtly gay about Stevie Nicks at all. She wears wiccan clothes and gives a relatively modest performance that is free from sexy dancing.
She’s no Madonna, Miley Cyrus, nor Cher. And yet, the LGBTQ+ community adores Stevie Nicks very much.
And it has gotten to the point where it’s almost impossible to describe her fanbase without associating it with the gays. With that said, many people strongly believe that she bleeds rainbow.
However, her dating history and song lyrics suggest otherwise. If Stevie Nicks is gay, then why is there such a dearth of women in her past relationships? Plus, she hasn’t made a single song that talks about her sexuality.
So, is Stevie Nicks really gay or she another straight gal who happened to be crowned as a gay icon by the community? Let’s find out!
Stevie Nicks: The Gay Icon of 90s Rock
Stevie’s influence to the gay community is unfathomably great. And there’s nothing else that could better sum up her significance and impact to the gay community than the Night of a Thousand Stevies event.
It’s an annual get-together party where drag queens, impersonators, and fans all over New York meet up to celebrate Stevie Nicks’ music. Trust me, if you can gather hundreds of gays and drag queens in a single room every year just to celebrate you, you best believe you’ve done something extraordinarily meaningful for them.
Her music has also been used in many projects involving the LGBTQ+ community. For instance, popular musical TV show Glee featured Stevie’s song Landslide in an episode where two female characters profess their feelings for each other.
In an interview, Stevie described what she felt about the show using her song for that particular scene:
“You know, I went down there when they were doing Landslide and I stayed there for six hours and watched them film the whole thing. I watched Gwyneth (Paltrow) and Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) sing the song 50 times, and I had such a good time.”
As you can see, Stevie Nicks loves the support she is getting from the gay community. While it is undeniable that she is one of the most important figures in the gay culture, what remains unclear is her own sexuality. In an interview, she finally speaks up about the mystery surrounding her sexual identity.
The Mystery Behind Stevie Nicks’ Sexuality
As it turns out, the American rockstar is enigmatic towards her sexual orientation for a reason: she doesn’t like having everything about her figured out. According to her, it’s bad for business.
“I definitely used my sexuality in a certain way. I kind of draped it all in chiffon and soft lights and suede boots. Everybody now is just much more blatant. Personally, I think that being a little more mysterious works better, and it lasts longer. You should be very careful that you don’t build everything you have around how cute you are or how sexy you are, because, unfortunately, no matter how cute you are or how sexy you are, in fifteen years, that won’t be the most important part of your music. I knew that in my twenties. And I really prepared for that.”
Well, Stevie, looks like you were right on two things. First, being mysterious definitely gets people talking about you.
And second, nobody seems to be enjoying the sight of a fifty or sixty year old diva wearing fishnet stockings and leather corsets. Guess you should thank your twenty year old self for sparing you from that horror!
Stevie Nicks’ Response to Gay Rumors
Despite Stevie’s previous stance on keeping her sexuality a mystery, she has actually gone on record to address the gay rumors. In 2013, Stevie Nicks admitted that she is not romantically nor sexually interested in women. And that she is, in fact, straight.
“Oh, no. I’m not gay. I could never do that. I like men way too much. That would never work for me.”
Her preference for men does show on her dating history. She’s only ever had boyfriends – no girlfriends. But still, Stevie remains very supportive of the gay community.
“I can’t say that I’m so glad that gay people like my music, because I have never looked at gay people as different from any other people. We are all one consciousness. The fact that anybody loves my music makes me feel very good, because this is what I do.”
Well, what can we say? Stevie Nicks just proved that you don’t have to be gay in order to show love and respect to the LGBTQ+ community.
Likewise, gay or not, Stevie Nicks deserves all the support and recognition for the type of music she puts out. An artist like her is rare to have nowadays, so we should appreciate her regardless of her sexual orientation.
